Earlier, Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials were separate products. Now, with Windows 8 Consumer Preview, Microsoft has simplified them without losing the power and made into a single solution called “Windows Defender”.
The purpose of Windows Defender is to protect your Windows from malware, spyware, virus and any other security threats for your Windows 8.
However, you can disable the Windows Defender and install any third party antivirus on your Windows 8 Consumer Preview. It may be noted that Windows 8 CP is just released and many antivirus manufacturers may not have released a Windows 8 Consumer Preview compatible version of their antivirus products.
